Elaine Fath Blog #11

  1. Kaizen is the productive, continual, often small-scale adjustment and readjustment of ideas to improve the overall quality of a design or project. This coincides with the design theme "good design entails continuous redesign," or iteration.
  2. For example, one of our original ideas for project six was to give kids waiting in line some kind of prize as an incentive to participate in a simple group game or activity led by a Disney cast member.
  3. After using kaizen--that is, adjusting the idea slightly and imagining how it may change the outcome--the idea became creating a play area located alongside an adult line that would challenge kids to complete a small task, puzzle or game in order to receive a small incentive, which would allow kids to be both active as well as focused and engaged, which are all key strategies to avoiding boredom.
