The site I chose last week was www.ask.com. I think remote-user research in the form of random phone calls and/or surveys would be the best possible way to understand user needs. Shadowing would not be the best choice because millions of people throughout the world may use this website so it would be hard to decide this from a select few people. You could have a user walk through your website during a phone interview to get their live opinion on how well the site works for them. Phone calls and surveys are a great way to collect information from people that doesn't cost a ton of money.
